Level Up Your Leadership: Roleplay, History, and Making the Tough Calls

Leadership is much more than maintaining the status quo in the shadowy realm of C-suites and boardrooms. It's a nonstop, death-defying high-wire act of tight-rope decisions with the added excitement of no visible safety net. How, then, can we equip today's decision-makers with the tools they need for tomorrow's challenges? Enter stage right: role-play scenarios based on historical events.

The Past is Prologue

For all the chatter about the future being unpredictable and the past being long gone, history does, in fact, rhyme or repeat—or, at the very least, rhyme. By retreading historical events, we can pinpoint patterns, dissect methods and strategies, and immerse ourselves in problem-solving that transcend the boundaries of time and industry.

The value of this immersion cannot be overstated. It's one thing to intellectually understand the factors that led to the collapse of, say, Blackberry's market share. It's an entirely different (and much more powerful) experience to step into the shoes of Blackberry's CEO in 2007, stare into the cold, unblinking eye of the imminent iPhone revolution, and sweat out that fear-inducing decision.

Role Play is the Way

Role-playing encourages experiential learning, learning by doing. Remember, leadership isn't a spectator sport. While traditional classroom-style lectures and case studies can provide a solid foundation, they often do not mirror the pressure, stress, and emotional stakes of real-world situations.

Roleplay, however, does this in spades. It transports decision-makers from the safe confines of a classroom or office into the chaotic cockpit of an unfolding crisis. It's the reading vs doing argument, and doing often provides a stickier, more profound understanding. There's no better way to learn how to make tough calls than by, well, making tough calls.

The Role of History in Roleplay

But why history, you might ask? After all, we could devise entirely fictional scenarios designed to test various skills and aptitudes. While that's true, historical scenarios come pre-loaded with the advantage of context. We already know what happened, why, and what went right or wrong. This allows participants to benchmark their responses and strategies against actual outcomes and, more importantly, provides invaluable insights into how actions and decisions resonate through time.

Now, not that every decision-maker should be wedded to the affairs of the past. As the poet T.S Eliot cautioned, "We cannot revive old factions. We cannot restore old policies. Or follow an antique drum." But what we can do is learn from them, extract their valuable lessons, and use these narratives as critical primers for our future endeavours.

Engaging with historical roleplay scenarios as part of a leadership training program is like time-travelling into the future. It offers a safe space to stumble, learn, adapt, improvise, and wrestle with complex decisions without the risk of real-world fallout. Decision-making and strategic thinking are muscles that can be and should be exercised vigorously and often.

After all, you wouldn't want your first 10K run to be on race day. Similarly, leadership demands preparation and rehearsal. So, why not make it interesting with a dash of drama, a slice of history, and a little roleplay?
