Option 1:

Prescription Perplexity: Crisis at SMHO

Scenario:

Exercise “La Mauvaise Prescription” draws us into the serene coastal region of Normandy, France where we find ourselves at the heart of Sainte-Marie Healthcare Organisation(SMHO). SMHO, a beacon of trust and healthcare excellence, now finds itself entangled in an unforeseen scandal that threatens to tarnish its esteemed reputation. An investigative journalist, following a lead, has unveiled a series of inaccuracies and ethical breaches surrounding the prescription of a high-risk experimental medication. The medication in question was intended for a select group of terminally ill patients, but reports suggest it was being provided to other patients with different conditions. The motive alleged is a concealed kickback scheme involving the pharmaceutical company and select senior executives at SMHO. This revelation has led to a public outcry, government scrutiny and a rapid decline in trust amongst stakeholders. Amidst this chaos, players are tasked to manage the escalating crisis, devise strategic communication and engagement plans, and refine existing protocols to prevent a similar incident in the future.

Aims and Objectives:

1. To manage and defuse the immediate crisis by devising an effective Crisis Management Plan, focusing on speedy, open, and transparent communication with all stakeholders, including employees, patients, government bodies, and the public.

2. To design a strategic Stakeholder Engagement Plan that rebuilds trust amongst various stakeholders, with a particular focus on regaining public trust, and mend relations with government organisations and the media.

3. To collaborate and draft an Enhanced Prescription Protocol to identify, assess, and control unethical practices within the organisation, thus ensuring patient safety and organisational ethics. This protocol should include preventive measures and corrective actions to avoid a repeat of the current scandal.

Option 2:

“Scandal at Bien Sûr Health Trust: Crisis Management and Ethical Dilemmas”

Scenario:

Bien Sûr Health Trust, a renowned healthcare organisation in France, finds itself embroiled in a scandal which has created shockwaves amongst the public, media, and its key stakeholders. The scenario is set around the enigmatic CEO, Dr. Vincent Charpentier, who has been accused of using his influential position to bypass the regulatory organ transplantation protocol in favour of wealthy foreigners who can pay a premium – an act tarnishing the reputation and integrity of the Trust.

As the news breaks, the Trust’s high-ranking officials and Board of Directors must deal with the scandal’s repercussion. The scenario unfolds in real-time, taking participants through a series of events including press storms, public outrage, potential lawsuits, investigation by health ministry and ethical committees, as well as the internal turmoil within the organisation.

Complicating the issue, the Trust has recently opened a new wing – ‘The Charpentier Wing,’ funded by anonymous donors, adding suspicion to the situation. The scandal puts the new wing’s opening, the Trust’s funding and public standing all at risk. The participants, playing the roles of Trust managers, Board Members, and PR Team, must navigate through this crisis, reflecting on ethical decisions to protect the healthcare organisation’s brand, reputation, and future.

Aims and Objectives:

– Manage the immediate fallout of the scandal and develop a crisis communication strategy to address both the media and the public, as well as internal stakeholders. This will test participants’ communication skills, their ability to manage public perception and to mitigate reputational damage.

– Develop a step-by-step plan to thoroughly investigate the allegations, involving the relevant authorities and maintaining transparency during this process. This will test participants’ ability to maintain procedural justice, even during challenging situations.

– Create a long-term strategy to restore the Trust’s tarnished image, including policies to prevent similar incidents in the future. This will test participants’ strategic planning and their understanding of ethical issues within healthcare organisations.

Option 3:

“Prescription Predicament: The De La Guérison Hospital Scandal”

Scenario:
De La Guérison Hospital, a prestigious healthcare institution in the heart of Paris, is lauded for its groundbreaking advancements in medical science. However, the hospital now finds itself at the heart of a scandal. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Antoine Remy, has been receiving financial kickbacks from a pharmaceutical company, VitalMed, in exchange for preferentially prescribing their experimental treatments to patients without their full informed consent.

The accusations came to light when an investigative journalist, Amélie Durand, published a series of articles in “Le Monde” implicating Dr. Remy and detailing the experiences of several patients. The scandal has created an uproar among the public, and the hospital’s reputation is under serious threat – politically, socially, and financially. The situation is further complicated by an impending visit from the French Health Minister.

The hospital’s crisis management team, including board members and senior staff, must manage this escalating scandal while ensuring that patient care remains their topmost priority. The team must also devise a strategy to maintain public trust, handle press inquiries and navigate legal implications. All decisions made should exemplify the organisation’s commitment to honesty, transparency, and patient welfare.

Aims and objectives:

1. Develop a response strategy to address the scandal by examining the accusations, determining the hospital’s stance, and identifying the key messages that need to be communicated to the public.
2. Identify mechanisms to ensure transparency and establish measures to rebuild trust among patients, employees, and stakeholders while maintaining the hospital’s reputation.
3. Determine and prepare for potential legal implications, considering the hospital’s duty of care, consent laws, and conflicts of interest rules in French law.
